Module Details

APSMO Inc. is pleased to be piloting this new course that introduces and explores a variety of strategies to promote the development of effective maths problem-solving skills in primary Stage 2.

In addition to mathematical concepts, current issues surrounding brain science, maths anxiety and productive persistence are addressed and strategies for supporting First Nation students are incorporated into the learning.

The course contains the following three modules, presented in an interactive workshop format.

Module 1: The Importance of Problem Solving in the Primary Mathematics Classroom

This module looks at the importance of solving problems to promote an understanding of patterns and algebra. It emphasises the importance of questioning in problem solving lessons and addresses the common issue of maths anxiety – what it is, and how can we alleviate it.

Module 2: Using Diagrams When Solving Problems

This module addresses the importance of solving problems to promote an understanding of fractions and decimals. It specifically looks at the relevance of diagrams and their use in problem-solving activities as well as analysing work samples and orchestrating discussions.

Module 3: Brain Science and How the Brain Affects Our Learning

This module explores the importance of reasoning in problem solving. It looks specifically at cooperative problem solving and how students can work together to reach solutions and focusses on the solving problems featuring measurement and geometry.
