About Us Welcome to APSMO Inc The Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) is a not-for-profit, professional organisation that offers a range of mathematical competitions for students aged from 8 – 14. The programs are unique in that they focus on the students’ ability to solve mathematical problems in a creative manner – as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a prescribed method. The APSMO Maths Olympiad has been operating in primary schools since 1987 and in high schools since 2003. Each year thousands of schools participate in the competition from around Australia, New Zealand, and internationally. In 2015, APSMO introduced the Maths Games to provide an opportunity for mainstream students in Years 5 and 6 to learn valuable problem solving skills and expose them to the application of mathematical problem solving strategies and techniques. In 2022, APSMO expanded the program to include a Senior Maths Games aimed at mainstream students in Years 7 and 8.The most recent addition to the APSMO suite is the Maths Explorer program for students in Years 3 and 4, which was launched in 2022. With the introduction of the Maths Explorer, APSMO has created a maths problem solving Pathway of Achievement for all students from Years 3 to 8 that stimulates an enjoyment of mathematics and lays the foundations of future success. The Maths Olympiads, Maths Games and Maths Explorer are an ideal complement to the school curriculum. The main aims of the programs are to: Introduce students to important mathematical concepts Teach major strategies and develop flexibility for problem solving Foster creativity and ingenuity and strengthen intuition Stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics Provide for the satisfaction, joy and thrill of meeting challenges APSMO supports teachers and students by providing a range of resources to complement the teaching of mathematical problem solving, including a number of textbooks available for purchase on this site. We also provide a range of Professional Learning workshops in mathematical problem solving for teachers.
