Maths Games Years 7-8

Senior Program

The Senior Maths Games has been specifically designed to provide mainstream students in Years 7 and 8 with an opportunity to learn and develop valuable maths problem solving skills. The Maths Games is focused on encouraging students to challenge themselves and develop their own abilities whilst working with teachers and fellow students to enhance their skills in this area. Students do not compete against teams from other schools in this program.

The Maths Olympiad is the ideal format for high achieving students to work in a more competitive environment with more challenging questions to hone their skills.

No. The Maths Games program is designed to encourage all students to be involved. The main aim of the Maths Games is to facilitate the development of new skills and problem solving techniques.

APSMO provides a Resource Kit for teachers prior to each Maths Games paper that contains sample questions and solutions focussing on the two problem solving strategies that will be included in the relevant Maths Game paper. Teachers can use this Resource Kit to conduct problem solving lessons and practise sessions, taking the students through the solutions to help build their confidence and ability.

APSMO’s recently published book, Building Confidence in Maths Problem Solving, that contains over 150 past Maths Games questions and solutions, can also be purchased through the APSMO Resource Centre.

We recommend that at least one hour per week is dedicated to practising Maths Games style problem solving. Teachers should also encourage students to practise at home.

All registered students will receive a certificate.

Five special awards are also provided to each team for presentation to deserving students at the teacher’s discretion.

If a student transfers to another school that is participating in the Maths Games, his/her results can be transferred to the new school’s team.

Written notification containing details of the student and both schools’ teams must be provided to APSMO in order for the transfer to take place.

APSMO does not recommend that students participate in both programs at the same time. If a student successfully participates in the Maths Games program one year, their teacher may then recommend they enter the Maths Olympiad competition the following year.

The standard cost to register one team of up to 30 students in the Maths Games is $180 per team.
An Early Bird discount rate of $160 per team is available for registrations received before the end of the previous year.  Discounts are available for multiple Maths Games team registrations.
