Module Details

This course expands on the modules provided in Strategies for Teaching Problem Solving in Mathematics – Years 5 & 6.

It contains the following three modules, presented in an interactive workshop format.

Module D: Procedures Without Reasons. This module focuses on the benefits of scaffolding students to create a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Common methods and misconceptions are discussed, and alternative approaches presented that offer different ways of teaching mathematics for long term retention and reuse.

Module E: Creating Problem Solving Opportunities. This module discusses ways of using different kinds of maths tasks to promote creative problem solving. It demonstrates ways that routine mathematics exercises can potentially be modified to stimulate thinking, and considers issues that students may experience with respect to making sense of word problems.

Module F: Enriching Learning Through Discovery. This module considers the impact of creating mathematics tasks by starting with an engaging activity, and then working out what it could be used to teach. Opportunities to conjecture and revise one’s thinking will be linked to the development of conceptual understanding in mathematics.
