Problem of the Week

The Magician’s Numbers

This magician has drawn up a table of numbers to indicate the value of a 2-digit number that was chosen by a man in the audience. Can you see a relationship between the numbers in this table? What do you think was the 2-digit number chosen by the man in the audience?

Answer:

The number the man in the audience had chosen was 97. This clever magician was able to make it the sum of the four numbers in each horizontal row and vertical column and each diagonal in his table. This is called a ‘magic square’.
