Dog Walking Pace

A good walking pace is about 1.5 metres per second. Using this speed and the information in the picture, what would be the average pace of the person walking the dog (in metres per second)?

Answer:

Walking the distance takes 17 minutes, which is 17 x 60 = 1020 seconds.

Walking 1.5 metres in every second, the distance walked is 1020 x 1.5 = 1530 metres.

The person walking the dog, also walks 1530 metres.

1 hour 20 minutes = 60 + 20 minutes = 80 minutes.

80 minutes = 80 x 60 seconds = 4800 seconds.

This person’s average speed

= 1530/4800 metres per second

= 0.31875 metres per second.
