Capacity percentages

3% of Burrendong Dam’s capacity is 35 640 ML. What is 144% of this dam’s capacity?

Answer:

Use division to find what 1% of the capacity is, then multiply this to find 144%.

35 640 ML / 3 x 144 = 1 710 720 ML

Notice that the capacity of a dam is not the amount of water that the dam can hold, but what it can hold for certain purposes. To find out what is meant by the capacity of a dam, watch this short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1xQIlVzJ54.
